Open Kitchen

Relocating the kitchen to the old dining room, and creating a large open casual eating area created the backdrop for the "Great Room" addition to the existing home. The view from the island sink allows the Owner to oversee all the activities of the family both inside & out.

The kitchen area is uniquely defined by the use of creative detailing consisting of a dropped curved ceiling, doorway arches, and the location of the large raised island bar counter. The working areas of the kitchen are clearly positioned with the cooking and bulk storage directly behind the clean-up counter, with the prep sink, pantry and microwave adjacent, which allows 2 cooks in the kitchen.

The combination of different materials and textures such as custom stained maple shaker type cabinets, polished granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and multi coloured slate flooring create the warmth and character of the entire room.

Minimalist Design

To transform the 50 year old home to meet the Owner's requirements for a minimalist design that would benefit from the rock outcroppings and panoramic ocean view, yet still fit within the context of their neighbour's homes.

The redesign of the major interior spaces was contained within the height envelope of the existing gable roof. The new master suite was designed as a separate wing to the main house. Raising the grade to the garage, and relocating the doors toward the new entry courtyard provided a more welcome address from the street.

The recessed band below the roof soffit enhances the horizontal look of the building, and the use of rainscreen stucco, horizontal siding, custom coloured aluminum (low E) windows complements the simple palette of maple cabinets, slate and hardwood floors, and stainless steel interiors. A high efficiency gas furnace and heat pump provide heating and cooling to the home.

The kitchen is the central meeting place for the family, and the simple palette of maple, granite and stainless steel materials complements the clean, minimalist style of the house.

To create a private, peaceful retreat for the master suite away from the main living areas of the home, the new addition was designed and located to respect the natural privacy created by the exposed bedrock outcroppings. A simple palette of materials including maple cabinetry, polished granite counters, slate and ceramic tiles create a clean, minimalist look throughout the suite that provides a backdrop for modern conveniences and accessories.

Outdoor Retreat

To create a tranquil, unique, outdoor entertainment retreat that takes advantage of the natural privacy of a south facing rear yard.

The bold, diagonal location of the pool defines the garden into a series of both casual and intimate, private areas, at the same time to give the illusion of a much larger back yard. The use of raised planter beds and the open wooden trellis further enhance the strong diagonal axis of the pool, create cozy and inviting seating areas, and become focal points within the privacy of the existing hedges.

The raised bar and hot tub patio area creates a natural pause and focal point between the covered main floor deck and the pool patio as you make your way to or from the garden. The layering, texture and colours of the plants, shrubs, rock walls and coloured concrete enhance the overall composition of the existing craftsman home.

To transform the exciting 1940's chunky bungalow into a comfortable Craftsman family home. The roof was raised to accommodate a new master bedroom, walk-in closet, and ensuite on the upper floor. The main floor was redesigned to maximise the efficiency of the existing floor area. A front porch and dining room were added. The lower floor includes a bedroom, laundry and high efficiency mechanical equipment. Extensive use of traditional wood detailing, hardwood, slate floors, stained pine cabinets and granite counters complete the warm interior.

To transform the 1970's kitchen/nook area into an elegant centerpiece for cooking and grown-up entertaining. This dramatic transformation was accomplished by; extending the existing dining area to accommodate a new eating bar, using an 'L' shaped kitchen cabinet layout with a large centre island as the focal point of the work and entertainment area, and re-organizing the existing spaces around the new kitchen to maximize room layout efficiency. The use of high glass counters, stainless steel appliances and trims complete the smooth, clean lines of this sophisticated kitchen renovation project.

To create
a new gallery space and office addition indicative of a sculptor, while maintaining garden views from the existing kitchen and ocean views from the front entry path. The barn like volume, enhanced through the use of salvaged fir timbers, board & batten siding, and dry stack stone wall which defines the entry courtyard, presents a bold new image to the street. The new entry doors were custom made from cedar slabs and the existing front door replaced with a sliding barn door. Large expanses of windows maintain ocean and garden views.
